Frequently Asked Questions

You Ask - I Answer

I’ve compiled a list of the most frequent questions that I have received over my career. It’s normal and encouraged for patients to ask many questions when choosing to work with a licensed Psychotherapist. Here are some answers to the questions I receive the most. If you can’t find what you are looking for, please get in touch.

What is psychotherapy?  Is it just talking out loud to a quiet listener?

Listening is key, but psychotherapy is a lot more.

  • Having a person you can trust and feel connected to in a deep way.

  • Getting tools to help with functioning at a higher level in the world.

  • Becoming more emotionally intelligent and able to enjoy family, friends and colleagues.

  • Learning basic methods for being emotionally regulated and competent in communicating both professionally and personally.

  • Taking one's emotional regulation as a means for handing all the bumps one faces in being human, including conflict resolution and loss of jobs, health, a loved one and facing the end of one's journey.

What is the difference between crisis intervention and on-going psychotherapy?

Crisis intervention is getting help for a situation that takes you into fight/flight mode.

Psychotherapy is an internal journey, whether as an adolescent, a person in mid-life transition, or a senior.

Each developmental stage faces challenges, as well as offers opportunity for growth.

What special skills do you have to help patients/families cope with acute and chronic medical illnesses?

I have worked as a medical social worker in hospitals throughout my practice.  This unique background has given me the experience to be a catalyst for helping my patients and their families get through the crisis of illness.  I help guide them through their illness, into the present, without letting it get in the way of enjoying life.
